I know that fantasy and science-fiction have been successfully merged before (James Cameron's Avatar); but recently, I've been thinking why not bring epic poems and classic stories into space?
How cool would it be to read Homer's Odyssey in space? Instead of a rock shoal and a whirlpool, Scylla and Charybdis could be twin black holes, maybe from a collapsed binary star, or an asteroid field and a black hole. Troy and Greece could be planets in different systems. You could call it "Helen of Sector 188.8.131.52" instead of "Helen of Troy".
That'd actually be pretty cool.
