FanFic? Or Not FanFic?

In my last post, if you remember, I said I like to use other writers' stories as inspiration for my own; but try to stay away from fan fiction...but who hasn't written a Star Wars or Star Trek story?

Well, there isn't a problem with fan fiction.  It can be good reading.  I can be a difficult task writing in someone else's world and abiding by the rules they've set.  But, it can also be limiting.  If I want to write a scenario at, say, Hogwarts, and I want to involve giant robot mechs, I can't because the two don't fit in the world J.K. Rowling set.

Of course, this doesn't mean you can't write that story or shouldn't.  I just believe that at some point, it will stop being a Harry Potter fanfic and become your story.

Go ahead and write whatever you want, by all means.  I mean, there's rumors that 50 Shades of Grey started as a Twilight fanfic and The Mortal Instruments started as a Harry Potter fanfic, so--as it's been said countless times--there are no rules to writing.
